A local tree surgeon has just had a look at them and confirmed what you've said. They're both goners. The trunks are enormous (apparently the widest he's ever seen) and it's not possible to get stump grinders into our garden so I can't have them dug out to plant new trees in their place.
Feeling very sad and a bit guilty for cursing them for dropping their berries on my garden furniture every year.

Could you get one of these portable stump grinders into the garden?
