Roof repairs

Hi everyone,

I have one of the standard wooden garden sheds (perspex windows etc), it's fairly new, but with heavy rain and some wind recently a tree fell and damaged the roof. It is not too bad, but there is a hole where a branch came right through. It is only a few inches in diameter, but rather than having the expense of a new roof I was wondering whether there was anything suitable to cover it? Unfortunately I have been told I can't claim on my home insurance. Damn! Any help would be good.

Thanks

  • Alan - A quick fix may come by means of a suitably size piece of exterior grade plywood screwed & glued (liquid nails adhesive is best)  from the inside....then I presume the whole roof or a section of it will need re-felting.

Aha yes, that may work. Although I was going to try and avoid the cost of re-felting. until next year. I'll have a look and see what I can find.

Ah ok, is this what you are referring to pansyface?

What do you think to putting over a sheet like this? I think this may look a bit more neat than a repair job as I am not massively DIY savvy.

  • Probably bitumen you're thinking of, Pansy....I would imagine the thickness involved would mean that it wouldn't dry properly.

That won't keep heavy rain out, and it'll get soaked and heavy and lead to rot in the any timber it touches.  It'll also prevent the mineral felt from drying out and that'll lead to rot as well.

The repair suggested by David isn't complicated - I could do it and I'm a retired girl!!! image

    Hi all,

Ok thanks. Anyone got a link to the roof felt adhesive? It looks like I'll be off out this evening to buy some timber to repair the roof. Looks like it will be a sunny weekends work image

  • Hi Alan,

As suggested a sheet of plywood, preferably Malasian exterior ply and take off any existing felt/sheeting and replace with a good quality pond liner.

I built my neighbours shed. One of those put together if you can sheds. covered it with pond liner and it has never leeked and has withstood all of the storms we have had in the south east. That was two years ago.

    Hope this helps you

  • Thanks for the advice. Haven't got round to doing it, but I will report back once I have.
