Help something growing in my lawn!

Hi, Does anyone know what this is growing in my lawn and how i can get rid of it without damaging the grass? Ive had a tentative pull at it and it seems quote sternly rooted in place. Any advice much appreciated. Thanks Jason

    Hi Jason, see this post:

In your case is looks very much like suckers from the shallow root of a nearby cherry tree.  See how they are all roughly in a line?  Follow that line and you should arrive at the tree in question.  Most folk just keep mowing them off.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks both, it looks like your spot on as I have a large Cherry Tree approx 20ft to the left of the picture! Strangely though, its at a right angle to the line of suckers rather than in line, I guess the roots can twist and turn a bit under the ground though.

One more question if I may.... Whats a sucker?

    Thanks

    Jason

Suckers  come up from the roots of plants and develop into more trees.

There's also the possibility of seedlings which look very similar after a few mowings

Lordy, so unchecked these things will grow into more trees?

Sounds like id better get the mower out ASAP.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.
