Can anyone ID this plant please?
in Plants

Dear Forum Members,
Please could any of you identify this plant in our border? It gets to a whopper height if left un- pruned. I found this out because I missed the early season prune of quite a few things in the garden having moved in during the winter, and it became apparent that this plant should have had a prune at some point as it reached nearly 6ft. Quite pretty flowers – see picture.
Many thanks,

Thalictrum flavum, or possibly T. sphaerocephalon
Both have yellow fluffy flowers and aquilegia like leaves.
thanks Fidget. I've looked both up and it would appear that it is the Thalictrum Flavum . Many many thanks!!!

Yep, agree with fidget. you shouldnt need to prune it, as it dies back in winter. All the new growth comes in Spring, and if you prune it you may not get any flowers.

Ok, so what happened was we moved here in December '13 and by May '14 this plant was about 6ft tall. As it was right on the only access path to the garden, I absolutely had to cut it right down - it was a monster. I was prepared to take the chance. I did not remove it altogether however because although I didn't know what it was, I could see that our predecessor had been cutting it back to ground level in the past, so I figured it was worth investigating further. The picture you see, with the flowers, is after a cut down to ground level late spring this year. I don't know how prolifically they flower, but it is quite pretty at the moment. thanks Punkdoc
