shell type insects!

Hi,
I have some weeds in my lawn and as I dig them up, just around the root ball are hundreds of tiny white shells, oblong in shape, almost look like maggots in size and shape, yet they are actually shells with some type of insect inside them.
Any ideas what they maybe please?
