They really like roots in shade and head in sun. That said my montana is buried inbetween conifers but its really old. Taylors say they can be planted in any aspect so shade shouldnt be a problem. Just one thing. If you do cutback you might not get many flowers in the spring but it should be OK following that.

They fall off its not an evergreen.
