Greenhouse Infestation

Hello,

I have just been in my GH to check on my Tomatoes and upon doing so discovered what can only be described as an infestation in one corner.
All along the side and up the panes must be hundreds of ants, I have noticed them before but not usually this many but today they were also joined by some flies that wee more like beetles with wings crawling along with them along and up the sides.
It wasn't one or two there must of been about 100 ants and 50 of these flies.

Can anyone tell me the best way to combat this? They're not doing any harm to the plants but the amount I just saw now makes it tricky for me to do anything without them crawling on me lol

I tried to get a photo before writing this post but I couldn't get any good enough to show.

  • Well I just went out with a boiled kettle and poured it out, seemed to help a bit.

The ones with wings may be flying ants. Last year I used the yellow sticky fly traps to combat various insects, have not, so far, needed to use them this year. My mother always used boiling water on ants; but you need to find out where their nest is and use it there.image

  • I think they were. Had a look in corner where I think they came from but can't get to it properly due to tomato plants lol will keep using the boiling water. I used the sticky traps a few months ago but they didn't really help.
  • Yeah they've been around for a while but today there just seemed to be a mad increase of them lol will keep an eye on it, keep adding water and when I clean the greenhouse before winter will try sort it properly if they're still around.

once a year the ants fly with wings ,now they may be of either sex but it is for one day only ,if they are causing major trouble as in aphids which they farm, use a nettle spray.image

  • Thanks everyone, will stick it out and see how it goes.

They do like dry conditions; one way to tell if your compost heap/bin is too dry, is if you have loads of ants in there.image
