onions

Just wondering if anyone has had a problem with this years onion sets. 

Winter sets fantastic monsters but the second sets planted in the spring looked so good but a couple of weeks ago it rained in the morning then sunshine for the rest of the day then this greyness appeared on the leaves and started to wither and the necks were very soft on pulling them out found that the root growth was very small the bulb itself looks uninfected and have eaten some but was Wondering if anyone else had suffered this problem oh my neighbors onions also has the same problem and his were amazing any ideas on what the problem is many thanks oh we are from the north east
