Digging out old rose bushes

I've dug out the main root ball of an old rose bush I want to get rid of.  I've been left with a large tap root and a couple of other roots one of which goes under the path.  I've dug down at least 2 feet and the root appears to go on for ever.  Do I need to get it all out or is there some other way I can kill it off?

Its probably a case of you should dig it out, but its probably more trouble than its worth, ive never had one sprout from a bit of root image
