Dear Forum members,

Another one for you.

Got at least 2 clumps. It's got big and has gone to flower and is looking messy, but wont touch it until I know what it is.

As you will see from one photo it looks like a big fox plonked itself in the middle with the stems all splayed out like spokes in a bicycle wheel.

Many thanks

A sedum, possibly 'Autumn Joy' or similar. It's hard to get the scale but you say big.

Pink flowers if it's Autumn Joy and the bees/butterflies love itimage

You can give tall sedums the 'Chelsea chop' at the end of May which results in shorter stems which don't flop over (so much) and lots more flowers. image  Did it to mine this year and will now be keeping them - I was considering sacrificing them as I was fed up of them falling over and smothering other things. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • They are 50-70cm high (quite tall).  I know what you mean Bob - they are not attractive at the moment. Any idea if there's anything I can do to make them tolerable until May? (May feels like centuries away right now!!!) How will I cope?!!

You could stake and tie them up but there is a danger of snapping the stems..

  • I inherited this garden so still getting to know what is where. I seem to remember that I was told there was sedum round about there. It is the second time I have discovered something which has missed a timely chopping -  to my peril. How annoying!! Grateful for the advice Bob & Nut - THANK YOU!
