It's a carex, a sedge
Carex cyperus came to mind but when I tried to find a link to it there was nothing, So maybe I mis-remember. No doubt about the Carex part though
In the sticks near Peterborough
I know this as the papyrus plant - Cyperus papyrus...
I think it may be Cyperus Alternifolius (umbrella plant). It has appeared in my garden too - just one clump at firtst, which I didn't knowingly introduce. But this year I've noticed it starting to spread, with seedlings appearing here and there.
I rather like it - it looks impressive in flower arrangements or just by itself, a few stalks in a vase. But I think it has big ambitions and I intend to keep an eye on it.
I think it is Cyperus eragrotis, Umbrella Sedge. It self seeds and will spread like mad, I now deadhead mine to keep it under control.
Thanks everyone for your help.Sorry it's taken time to reply but i've been searching around the websites looking for your suggestions,I think i've sussed it now so thanks again.
