Sudden dieback of Clematis montana

Lorraine56Lorraine56 Posts: 38

My otherwise healthy Clematis montana has suddenly developed brown patches on the leaves followed by branch dieback.  I have tried to prune back the dead areas which is not easy with a rampant Montana.  The roots have always been in shade and it is sited in full sun.  I do not believe this is wilt as montanas are usually resistant to this disease.  Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Thank you for your detailed response, pansyface. There is no slimy mucous, neither are the stems a pale straw colour, but having cut out the wilted stems today, I noticed new shoots growing from the base, so all may not be lost yet.  I am expecting more dead growth from where I may not have removed all the cut stems from pruning the plant, but hopefully with some TLC, I may be able to save it - such a beautiful plant when it is in full flower in the Spring.  All the best, Lorraine
