Rose planting depth

How deep should a rose rootstock be planted ?

R H S say at the surface others say anything from 1 inch  to 3 or 4 inches

    I was always taught to plant with the union just above the surface-to decrease the chance of suckering-has that advice changed?

    That was what I used to think, but in recent years I have read in books, magazines and on the internet that if you live where winters are cold the rose should be planted 1" - 2" deeper so that the union is below ground. This also helps stop rocking in the wind.

    Yes, the new advice is that the union should be below ground, for the reasons already mentioned and to encourage it to put out roots from the grafted plant.
