Whats eating my Tomatoes?

Something eating my tomatoes, could it be pigeons? They are growing in the garden in a pot. Would it be best to move them in the greenhouse?

Last year I had magpies eating mine. They were sometimes leaving bits just outside the growhouse on the gravel. I didn't know who the culprits were till I saw one going in! I had to rig up some mesh ( I used the excess shelves) across the front so that I could still leave them open for ventilation.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks Fairygirl, I think you may be right as we have quite a few around here. Good idea about the shelves I will give it a try.

Dont think its slugs Edd as there are no trails around the plants.

Have taken both suggestions, I have fenced it off as Fairygirl suggested and I will now deal with the slugs. Thanks again to both of you.

I would put my money on Tomato Moth. Look very carefully for moth poo on the lower leaves under the eaten tomatoes. Then look under the leaves. The caterpillars are masters of disguise. Look very carefully until you find the culprit.

I'm with WO and would say caterpillars of the tomato moth if you don't find any slugs.  They are indeed incredibly good at hiding so will be tricky to find - try looking in the gap between canes, string or other supports and the stems.  On a very quiet night you can hear them munching!

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
