I've grown 'Painted Lady' several times and found that although the red & white flowers have some decorative appeal, it cannot compete with modern-day varieties...the pods become tough if not picked very young i.e. 5 or 6in long.
This was a popular choice in Victorian times and it is reckoned to be grown as a decorative plant in the 1600's.
