North facing wall
in Plants
Our garage wall with its pitched roof is north facing and on view from our sitting room. I put up some fairy lights on a trellis but OH didn't like them so I have decided that planting is the only option. Someone has suggested that a climbing hydrangea in a deep trough would do the trick because the terrace goes right up to the garage wall and is OH's pride and joy so I can't dig a hole. Has anyone else tried this or are there any other suggestions? Definitely not ivy!

There are 2 climbing hydrangeas in pots, growing up the local old folks' home here. Pots maybe 2ft wide and tall, plants in place for 3 years I think, doing ok. I imagine the gardener feeds and waters them pretty constantly!
Alberic Barbier a climbing rose should do ok in a large pot.
Climbing hydrangea does take a year or two to get going and I think you want something a bit quicker than that so I would go with the other suggestions that have been made already.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I hadn't realised that some roses and clematis could be planted in pots and in the shade. I've got much more choice than I thought!
