bug problem on herbs

Hi everyone
I have recently moved into a property with a very large mature garden. I planted some herbs yesterday and noticed that after a few hours they were being invaded by the attached picture. (the bug not the picture lol)....I then noticed they were coming from a near by low hedge.
I have three questions
1. should I get rid of them
2. and if so how?
3. I have my chicken in that area and don't want to harm them with pesticides
thanks
Simon

These are Cardinal beetles - there are a lot about at the moment it seems, we had a post about them yesterday on artichokes.
They are definitely 'Good Guys' and should be welcomed - they eat the larvae of other insects, including those of the Baddies
I'll try to find the other thread about them.

Oh fantastic, So I will leave them there then ! I hope the chickens don't eat them all.
Should I spread a few of them around the garden?
Any body want some I have 100'S kicking about the place
Leave them where they are - they know what they're doing

Yep seems they do as they are moving across my herbs...lucky me !
Just leave them. They get on fine without any "help"
I have lots of these to, but they are soldier beetles, not cardinals. Look at this link, they are still good guys though. http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/species/red-soldier-beetle
