Gardening Grandma, bearded Iris will grow right up to the arctic circle as long as they get some sun and a well drained soil neutral or slightly acid not lime.
Mine get noon to evening sun and I mulch them or should say around them as they like their crowns uncovered.
I saw plenty of sun when stationed at Bridgend also belting up and down the Breckons plus some good holidays at Tenby. Probably not this year though.

HI, If you grow from seed soak in water if the seeds are big unless you are setting straight away after removing from the plant  This is how I did it.. put some grit in with the compost. Then grit over the top. The first year they will grow a long root . the seconed year a bit of a leaf . they will slowly form a tuber. It took a while for mine to make a small plant . it hasnt flowered yet. So be patient- they say its a virtue , don't they - patience?

The leaves I leave on the plant after flowering . I too suround with something like a cranes bill or Baby's Breath. - Gypsophala . It will grow through it and it will be hidden .

  • Interesting, Frank. I live in Bridgend. My father was stationed in London in the army, and in those days you had to cross the River Severn into Wales on a ferry. He told me that it always started raining as he entered Wales. We get sun, of course, but for the last few years it has been very wet anf fairly cold.

Lucky3, thanks for the information about sowing peony seeds, you make me feel like trying it.

  • BTW, what I really meant about a spot that suits irises is a spot where they don't fight other plants and can be shown at their best. Another problem of my small garden.

Gardening Grandma, in Bridgend I met the Welsh dragon as well as the one that was on my shoulder patch. The Mother of my girl friend of the time Nesta, a long story!!
I often wonder what happened to Nesta, Nancy from Porthcawl and Ruth from Rhyl.

Only some of the flower heads on my Peonia Alba have opened but we did get a cold snap off the north sea for a couple of days they do not like that, oh well next year then.

  • My sympathies, though I used to be a teacher and I think the kids thought that I was the original Welsh dragon.

Peonies are stunning but flower briefly, are damaged and beaten down by rain and don't like cold. Then they leave a huge clump of untidy leaves. Gardeners specialise in hope - that this year the sun will shine, pests will leave them alone and there will be a glorious show.
