Reviving a hedge

I've just pruned a hedge of Berberis and Choisya which is about 25 years old.
It has never had any fertiliser or compost added to the soil or anything !
It looks a bit threadbare and sorry for itself at the moment and I'd like to try and revive it.
Can anybody help ?

I can give granular, water and then home made compost ! What more can these bushes want ? I'm spoiling them !
