Why so few insects this year?

  • We said just the opposite today.  A proliferation of insects.   Butterflies and bees aplenty.

More insects here in Cardiff this year also

  • @ Orchid Lady. That reminds me; last year I saw three dragonflies...so big I thought Amazon was delivering a package to me. image No deliveries this year! image

I've seen two so far, not together so they may well be the same one but it has been in the garden twice, they are beautiful image

We're in Norfolk and we've got loads more insects in the garden this year than last - we've had lots of hoverflies and bumble bees - yesterday I noticed honey bees in the garden, particularly on the hardy geraniums and a real increase in butterflies over the past week or so.

Lots of damselflies too; no dragonflies in the garden yet but I'm sure it won't be long - we're in a dragonfly hotspot image

We don't normally get  dragonflies Dove, I think it's only the second time I've seen them in the garden.  I saw honeybees too, I didn't know the difference until a few years ago image Unfortunately I think we also have more caterpillars, I need ti go on caterpillar hunt later but won't kill them, I put them on the hedge.

  • I was reading about this the other day, apparently there is a decline in bees across the world because of farmers using pesticides. Green peace have a PDF document about the problem and causes.

I've noticed butterflies and a few ladybirds, but not many bees. As I sit at my computer with the patio doors open, I can see my huge pot of lavender (very woody but still growing a good amount of flowers so leaving it be for the insects etc to enjoy) and last year there were loads of bees around it. I've not seen many at all so far this year.
