Spiders

I notice various small and spindly spiders living in my plants. Do they harm them in any way, either by damaging the leaves or something else?

Today I noticed a spider had caught a bee in a flower of a gladiolus, though they never seemed to have an effect on caterpillars throughout the year.

No, spiders are the good guys, no harm to plants and catch all sorts of other bugs, not just bees, nasties too image
  • My nan uses conkers to scare off spiders.

  • Didn't work though. She recently got bitten by a false widow, which ironically was living in her bucket of conkers.

Thanks for the replies. I noticed that the spiders are usually found under shrivelled leaves, and wasn't sure if this was because shrivelled leaves provide a good canopy, or the spiders were biting into the leave to make them shrivel.

I was sad to see a bee caught by one, but I suppose that's nature.

Ive seen one eating a wasp! Brave spider.

I managed to bring a load of false widows in with a batch of fir cones last year, was scared at first but they have been fine, havent had any trouble at all with them image

I made myself learn about them because i was really scared, they are great creatures, very important, plus my nan always said they were good luck! image
  • I thought they helped detach bees from their webs?
Im okay with the little ones but the larger bodied ones with gangly legs I have to admit have me running for the hills ...

A big one like that ran over my face once while i was lay on the sofa! Did freak me out a bit, but i was ok, had just watched a film by Chris Packham which explained why they come in the house etc, that really helped image
