Laying new turf lawn on solid builders clay
Hi
We have just completed a new build house and want to lay turf back and front However, the ground is solid clay and full of rubble.
We intend to remove as much rubble as possible then, we thought, if we levelled out the clay with fine stones such as pea gravel of some other drainage material we could then put down some top soil then lay the turf
Is this a sensible plan? will the turf take okay on top of this or are we being too simplistic ?
Just trying to avoid the back breaking work of dealing with breaking up the clay J
thanks

for a good lawn at least 6 in of topsoil. the turf will only root to the clay layer then stop. you will end up with a lawn that requires endless inputs of water and fertilizer. there are a lot of those out there.
