Can anyone please identify this variety of apple

Glyn4Glyn4 Posts: 20

Hello,

We have a quite mature apple tree in the garden of our recently new house. I cant tell what variety of apple these are. I was told by the previous owner they are both a cooking and eating kind. Can anyone identify them?

Thanks,

Glyn

Glyn the RHS have apple identification days around the country. They need two fully ripe fruit to check.

    Where do you live?

I live in Norfolk. I did originally think they might be Granny Smiths, then Grenadier apples but i don't think it's either. It would be nice to know what type they really are.

    Thanks.

..I also thought Granny Smiths...  obviously the ones we see in supermarkets are glossy through wax treatment... these are refreshingly clean... but it would be easy to tell by tasting and comparing I would have thought...as they are so readily available...

..whichever...aren't they a little early for apples...? to be ripe I mean...

Hi Glyn - I'm in Norfolk too image

Gressenhall Museum have an Apple Day each autumn  http://www.museumsnorfolk.org.uk/gressenhall-farm-and-workhouse

Contact them and find out when the 2014 apple day is being held, and what you will need to take along for them to identify your apple. image

  • With the paler makings on their skins and the shade of green they are, they look like Granny Smith.

Many thanks everyone for your help. I will definitely try and take them to an apple day to find out what they are. The ones in the photo got knocked off the tree and aren't quite ripe yet.
