Floppy sedums

Hi All,

I have alot of sedums and some of them have a tendency to grow in a bowl shape leaving an unsightly centre.

I think this is down to the richness of soil but it's funny how it is only the plants I bought that grow in this manner- the 'weed' ones I dug out my sisters garden are nice and compact.

How does everyone else deal with this? Should I stake them with a spiral at an early stage or should I be Chelsea chopping them?

Thank youimage

Chelsea chop works for me...or shade as that stunts growth. Chelsea chop gives you lots of new plants as they root easily in water.

Would it be too late to chop them now, Blairs?  One of them, gooseberry fool, just looks awful.

If I planted them closer together would that hinder them? I was thinking they might disguise each other.

Edit: I been reading old threads and am thinking perhaps I'll divide some of the larger ones this winter  which should negate the problem.

Too late now to chop them. You could also try growing them through an upside down hanging basket

I think I've left it too late for staking as well Verdunimage

The worst one, gooseberry fool, is already flowering, seems much further ahead than the others and I snapped two stems off just trying to prop them off the ground. It looks terrible.

I'll see if I can catch the other large ones in time using your method, it might stop them getting demolished if it rains. I think the problem has been me buying large plants and not splitting them straight away... Live and learn, same as you sayimage

Just a quick q: if I chop them next May, should I stake them as well, or is chopping sufficient?
