Lilley of the Valley

Dear Forum Members,

A friend gave me about 2 Lilley of the Valley plants in a pot as a gift for the garden.

I planted them in a similar situation to the situation they had been come from in her garden, which was in a shaded area of the garden in the grass surrounded by a few hedging plants. They were planted in the ground in roughly May time (vague guess).

Then, in June two groups of spiteful killer pyracantha shrubs were removed from either side, the tree surgeon taking care not to disturb the Lilley.

Nonetheless, the Lilley appears to have disintegrated and disappeared (but this may normally happened with the time of year, etc). I have no specific reason to believe it was damaged by Tree Man.

Am I worrying unnecessarily? Do they take quite well to being transplanted? If they are still Ok, when might I expect them to make an appearance?

Advice gratefully received.

Many thanks

Mine have still got their leaves on but I do remember when I was first given a clump it took a few years to establish, so don't give up just yet.  They come up in the spring. You say they are in the grass so I hope you haven't mown over them but just left them to naturalize.

  • Mine still have their leave on too, though they're a bit straggly.

my neighbour, who has a lovely lily clump in her garden tells me they can be hard to grow, especially from bulb (easier to establish in the green).

Also, I stuck mine in soil that wasn't well drained, so had to move them, which they hated! They also like ericacious soil, another thing I didn't know and won't always flower well without.

Don't worry grateful, once they establish, they can be almost weed like. It takes a few years, but by then you'll be cursing the fact you planted them.

  • I hope I can curse mine in a few years then!

I cursed mine too, they took over the whole border and even came up in another border across the lawn. 2 years ago I sprayed them with glyphosate and was convince they were gone. The other day I noticed that 3 have come up again!image
