problems growing echinacea
a few months ago I sowed some echinacea in my unheated shed about february and they all produced small shoots but one by one they all failed. are they usuallly dificult to grow? are they suspect to damping off?

All seedlings can get damping off disease, watering from underneath when the compost is fairly dry can reduce the risk. Echinacea isn't usually hard to grow from seed, so damping off could well be the main problem.
thanks. yeah i watered from the top too. another lesson learnt
Don't worry Fannyadams, mine all died too. Out of a tray of 24 seedlings, only one has survived, and I watered from the bottom! I have one in a pot now, which I am giving intensive care. Luckily you can still sow this variety outside in July for flowering next year so I'm going to sow some more today.
I also sowed a tray of Rudbeckia "Cherry Brandy" and lost the lot. I can't sow any more of those until next year, so that's that. And I've lost more, but I won't bore you. It's been a bad year for seedlings, I don't usually have any trouble.
