hi, I have just watched monty taking cuttings from lavender, I was going to do some later, do I need grit, because I don't have any, or can I just use compost, I do have rooting powder. thanks

You need something free draining or there's a danger of rotting

You can mix some vermiculite in with your compost, instead of grit, if that's easier for you to get
