On GW they showed sheeps wool pellets being used on an allotment.  I don't know what the cost is but it would seem a huge amount is needed as it has to form a fairly large physical barrier to the slugs.
  • That's what I've always thought about egg shells too. You would need to be consuming eggs on an industrial scale to have enough to put off any self respecting mollusc. Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke may have had enough for a small row of lettuce.

I did google sheep wool pellets after watching that piece on GW, and it looked more cost effective to buy the sheep and teach it to roll on the slugs. £18 for 10 litres of pellets, though I've no idea how far that would go (10 litres of compost not very far). Good luck if you work out how to make pellets though.

I collected a load of wool from our field this weekend. I got it down before the heavens opened, seems to have at least acted as a deterrent

Looking at the amount used in the allotment on GW it would probably be cheaper to hire a security firm to protect the plants.  Call me cynical, but it smells to me of the 'Green and Safe' brigade cashing in on the latest fad.

In my garden the slugs enjoyed the wool pellets and were not intimidated by the chicken wire underneath the wool pellets .  :(
