Brassicas raised bed depth

DarioDario Posts: 3

I built two large raised beds in my new garden, but couldn't manage to fill them to the top. The bottom is closed with cardboard and has a layer of prunings and hay 1-3 cm deep. I planted anyway 10 young cabbage plants, 10 kales, 10 broccoli plants. I tried to gather the compost around the points where I would put the small plants. In their actual state, they have an available depth to root of about 7-8 inches, and space on the side about 50cm.

  • Would that result in any problem for the plant growth?

  • If I am to add some more soil later on, should I replant everything, or I can add directly on the top of the actual "small mountains" on which the plats are?

Notice: I live in Bristol, UK, and here it rains quite a lot throughout the year.

Thanks for the help, I am really worried about my brassicas!

Hi Dario image  Afraid your pictures haven't uploaded - you need to click on the green tree icon on the toolbar above where you type your post and follow the instructions - afraid it doesn't work for phones.

If you can't make it work give us a shout image

Oh, so they do - never come across that before!

Right -  I think the kale and broccoli will need more depth than that or they'll get rocked by the wind which will cause root damage.  As they get bigger I'd put a cane by each one and tie in so they're as firm as they can be.  You can also top the soil up in the beds with the kale and broccoli in as much as you can as you can get hold of topsoil/compost.

The cabbages might be ok - what sort of cabbages are they?
