I too thought that I had blight a few weeks ago and I'm still not sure. The foliage went brown and withered but the spuds (charlottes) were fine and they still are. My mains have also got brown leaves so I have cut it back and will know in a couple of weeks if they are ok.
There have been alot of reports of blight this year, particuarly in the south west where I am as it has been damp and warm. Where abouts are you?
Winniecat, I'm also in the south-west and my Charlottes have bad blight. The tops have mostly died off, but the potatoes are fine. Charlotte tubers don't seem to be affected by blight, although they won't grow any more now. I try to remove the blighted tops to stop it spreading to my tomgatoes (OK so far....) but I'm leaving the spuds in the ground until I need them.
ok. My leaves ook pretty similar to Edd's post.
i'm just outside aberdeen and we've had fairly typical weather here lately ie heavy rain for a while then quite a lot of sun, pretty dry for the last week or so!
Think I'll take the leaves off that are infected and leave the tubers intact. Hopefully they will continue to grow whilst i'm on holiday then be ready for lifting at the start of august.
Thanks to all for advice
Note that there is a big difference between early and late blight. they are different diseases, both serious but each is caused by different pathogen and has different symptoms and should be managed differently.
I had early blight on my plants and managed this by cutting infected leaves and stems each day to minimise spread. This meant I got another few weeks out the plants before the plants striggled and I decided to lift the tubers. I'm eating boiled spuds in five minutes...they look clean but I won't store as I eat a lot of spuds anyway.
late blight can kill your plant much quicker and if you have that you'll want to do as Edd says above.
ok will post a picture in the morning and see what the verdict is.
