What plants could survive wet to dry position

At the bottom of the garden we get a flooded area after heavy rain. As we have had such nice weather lately it has dried out and is very hard clay. There are also quite a lot of tree roots too. The only things that have survived so far are snakes head fritillaries and primulas. Any suggestions welcome

Thanks nut. Didn't realise there was so much choice. A dogwood would be ideal. I will look the others up and make a plan
