Traditionally straw was spread over the strawberry bed (hence straw berryimage

Nowadays you can buy Strawberry Mats - google them and you'll find different stockists and suggestions of how to make some yourself.

I use thin wire, usually the stuff that comes with the cheap cloches, stick both ends into the soil as you would with a plant support, then the bunches/ trusses of fruit can be hung over them, seems to help stop pests getting at them too image

Strawberry mats are great - they biodegrade after a few years but don't blow about like straw.  I put slug pellets under mine image

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

You can make the mats out of old cardboard boxes and cereal packets. They last just about long enough. Cut a hole in the middle for the plant and a slot leading up to it so you can get it in.  Yes, slug pellets underneath.

I read somewhere that they're called strawberries, originally strewberries, from their habit of strewing themselves about.
