The ones I had not cut down overwinter were sending up side shoots. I used them as cuttings when I cut the plants down to about a foot in Spring. Easy to root and extra plants for free to dot about.
Sounds like once they find somewhere they like, they positively thrive. I hope they like my garden then. I looked up what to do over winter and it says online to mulch them with straw just to protect them a bit so I might do that with these first ones until I'm confident in letting them fend for themselves.
I'm in the south, in Dorset. I'm pretty sure it said to leave them standing until the spring but I can't be certain. I'll see if I can find where I read it.

James, where abouts are you; North, South etc. When it said to mulch them, did it say to cut them down first?
