I pour boiling water over them where you can see them all coming up from, usually does the trick!

    Hi Annemarie

Ants are carnivorous and don't eat plants. The main problems they cause are to build nests under a plant which damages the roots and to "farm" aphids, spreading them around plants. Is your soil dry, as ants do not like damp soil? If you locate the nests   absolutely soak them with water as this causes them to move out.

I agree with invicta, Also doubt any connection with your neighbour's tree felling or muck-spreading

Boiling water if not near a plant or a very good soaking
