My daughter was born in April 76 - she spent all summer wearing only a nappy and sleeping in a pram by a shady open window to keep her cool.
Her older brother spent the summer in a tent in the garden with the sides pulled up to get some air flowing through - the tent rotted in the sunlight and was never used again.
I spent the summer carrying buckets of bathwater to water the wildlife hedge we'd planted the previous winter.
That autumn was great for wild mushrooms - I'd take daughter out for a walk in her pram at about 5am after she'd had her morning feed, it was the only time it was cool enough for some exercise - and I got bags and bags full of wild field mushrooms and filled the freezer!
Sorry, not about tomatoes
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
....well I remember 76 (was just a pup of 52 at the time) .....luverly summer, roads sticky with melting tarmac and greenhouses were considered to be a hazard to tomato growing.
Anyway, the skins of outdoor sorts are always tough & split when it rains.
my grandfather told me once that in the summer of '76 all the allotmenteers removed the glass from their greenhouses as they were way too hot and were cooking the tomatoes on the vine!
here's hoping for a little bit of that sort of weather!!!
Yesterday I removed some of the lower leaves on my Tumbling Toms, just because they were yellow and some had gone brown, not too many just so the plant looked healthier, also it makes it easier to water them and the leaves won't get wet. This morning when I have watered them I noticed 2 teeny tiny tomatoes so we almost have fruit

Summer of 76 was 5 cant really remember anything except playing in the garden with the dog and lots of water he loved that.
Not sure if i would like a summer that hot as I am not a warm weather person but it would be fun to try and make my own sun dried tomatoes.
Play your cards right and I may tell you about the winters of 1962 or 47.
No David, not eating chocolate LOL!!

...before this thread sinks into oblivion, I would just like it to be known that I'm not 90....just feel it at times.
