Hello and rhubarb!
Hello! I am new to this forum, having recently created our first real veg patch consisting of three raised beds and some pots/planters. I am keen for my kids to get their hands dirty and make a connection with the earth, plus learn about the basic science of life - how things grow. I appreciate I am coming late to our first growing season and am keen to make up as much ground as possible, hence my first question here - can I still plant a couple of rhubarb plants in the mulched area next to my beds, or should I wait now until next year? The garden centres seem out of plants but I can find them to buy on line. Any additional advice of which varieties to get would be great as would any other suggestions of things I can plant now! Thanks in advance.

I would wait and plant in the early spring. They won't establish well in hot dry weather.
You could sow some Pak choi now - they germinate and grow quickly and you'll get a harvest of young leaves in about 30 days, and it should be developing hearts some 15 days later. It's hardier than it looks and will continue to give you a crop into late autumn.
I've just sown another couple of rows of Swiss chard - I'll be picking that in mild spells through the winter and well into the spring.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
The plants online probably wont be delivered until the winter, when they will deliver a crown or root. Use this time to get the soil ready with lots of compost or farm yard Manure.
Lots of things to grow now.....
radishes, kale, still time for carrots, beetroot, salad leaves.
Oh thanks! That is brilliant!! I will (try to be) patient and bide my time! It is so amazing watching the kids actually show an interest in the garden!
