What tree to buy?

Hi My friend lives in a small town in fife, scotland so the it can be pretty cold with little sunshine. She has been getting into gardening and transforming her small back yard into a jungle of flowers. She has mentioned several times she would like to plant a tree but unsure what. I am looking for suggestions for a lovely tree, that would flower, that maybe doesn't grow to more than 4 meters? Also where can I buy one? Most garden centres around here do not have a lot of choice! I have a lovely cherry blossom tree in my garden but the only place I can find to buy one is online. Please help a really naive gardener Thanks

What about a fruit tree? image
  • I thought about a fruit tree. Does it matter what fruit? I have an apple tree at the bottom of my garden but the apples have never grown larger than a pong pong ball.

It depends what sort of shape you want, i have a pear that has naturally grown in to a lovely goblet shape.

The size of the apples could be down to many things, but some are just small.

Strange question, but what does she want from the tree? Just to look at it, to sit under it, winter colour, fruit? Sorry for all the questions, but it will help to get the right one image

Ive used most of the online garden companies as ive got a bit of a thing for fruit trees! They have all been good, ashridge trees are good, and crocus are a bit pricey but very nice, most trees are guarenteed for a year image
  • It's mainly for something nice to look at with a bit a colour during the summer... When ever that may be. Could you recommend any websites?

Probably crocus is the best website, even if its just to find out what to get, katsura tree is supposed to smell like toffee apple and have beautiful autumn colour. Cornus kousa is on my wish list, very pretty spring/summer blossom, magnolias or lilacs are another thing to consider.

For me, if it was only going to be one tree, it would always be a fruit tree, but then i am a little odd!

Have a look on crocus, find a few things that take your fancy, im sure the folks on here will know where the best place to get them will be.

Have you tried Dobies garden centres. There are quite a few in Scotland. There is one in Dunfermline and one in Dalgety Bay, both Fife.

I occasionally go to the one in Stirling and have found it very good. I did not realise that that was not the norm.
