Can someone tell me please if this is Lavatera, I've looked at the photos in-line and can't work it out, there are so many varieties.

Panic ye not - it looks like one to me - leaves are the right shape etc - it looks as if it'll flower soon so you'll feel better when you see the flowers image

Yep, looks like it to me too.  Defo a Malva.

So that means that it's going to grow as big as the ones in the other border that I thought were Hollyhocks (see how to tame a hollyhock thread)??

I have planted about 8 grown from seed, I think I'm going to need to take some up as I have no rom for them to be that big....what a muppet!!

Anyone local want a Mallow plant??

It's hard to tell as there are hundreds of mallows!  As it looks like it's about to flower, it probably won't grow too much bigger this year and if it's an annual variety (likely) that'll be it.  The flowers can be very variable on the annuals - I had a lovely one from seed a few years ago:

I can't find the packet now but I'm sure it did say annuals as I've only ever sown annuals apart from the Poppy that got destroyed! I'll just have to watch they don't self seed then as there is definitely not enough room for them to get as big as my others.  Thanks Bob and Dove image

I remember years ago having a Lavatera OL and it grew and grew until I thought it was going to eat me alive!! It was like a triffid :-P A good plant to have though if you want a gap filled quickly image

BobTheGardener, that is gorgeous.  When you say you 'had' one from seed a few years ago - and if that is a photo of it - did something happen and you no longer have it?  Or is it alive and well and looking just as lovely?  I'm awash with too much pink in the garden which wasn't intended (gifts...and people always tend to give me pink things), but I'd forego my current anti-pink mindset for a lavatera like yours.

Hi yarrow, it was an annual and died at the end of the season.  I kept the seeds from it but they didn't come 'true' and looked nothing like the one I took the photo of, unfortunately!
