Save my hedge !

I call upon you masters of problems.

Please does anyone have any idea at what is going on with this hedge? It has been planted for 5+ years and has seemed to be doing well. But suddenly last summer we lost two in the centre of the pic below that were right next to each other? And now this year it seems as though we are loosing two more. The one to the right and then also one on the left but with a healthy plant in-between.

I can’t see any sign of bugs or sooty mould or anything that I can think of. They just seemed to up and die. I am in the south of France where it gets hot but they all have a watering system in place so that should not be a problem.

Is the only thing left to rip them all up and do something else as slowly I imagine they will all go image

Any suggestions?

  • also ignore the little palm  we lost that during the winter when i was not here.

  • Here are two close ups. I don't know if you can see but if i move the branches on the dying ones. they seem dusty. I don't know if that means anything. The healthy ones dont seem to have the same dust if moved. or is that it just breaking down.

Im not sure what the shrub behind is thats in the garden next door that is abandoned.

Nothing else is dying in the garden its the best the garden has ever looked minus the hedge image

  • Hummm, buddyboy I think you may be right.

Funny how sometimes it’s the simplest answer that is the right one.

When I think what they are growing in I should have guessed. The are between the pavings you can see and then about a foot of earth before they hit a small retaining wall that separates us from the neighbours which drop down about 2 foot. So I guess the trench of earth they are going in is just not enough for their now new size. 5 years ago would have been fine but not as if I can just pot them up any more haha.
