Garlic and onion contain compounds which can act a little like anti bis, but they wont really be effective so quickly, oil of cloves can help (a little) dabbed on cotton wool and applied directly to the gum.
You can rinse with tea tree or salt water to reduce bacteria, but im afraid these are all namby pamby when compared with hard core pain meds and anti biotics
Ibuprofen is best for toothache, not sure if you can take it, it depends if you can take asprin.
I hope you manage to get to a dentist, really feel for you x
I would suggest sucking whole cloves (2 or 3) in your mouth, rather than the oil of cloves. Wholes cloves are more readily available in the supermarket at the herbs and spices section.......you will get a higher concentration of clove oil from whole cloves and it will have a better effect.
If in serious pain... find the nearest walk in NHS centre. They should be able to offer antibiotics until you see a dentist.
A pharmacy will be able to supply painkillers. If you are not asthmatic or allergic to Ibuprofen, I recommend a mix of Solpadeine max(Paracetamol and codeine) up to eight a day,and Nurofen Plus (Ibuprofen and codeine) up to six a day.
Do not mix with alcohol, and as they are likely to make you woozy do not even consider driving on this combination.
Best of luck.
Clove oil contains a local anaesthetic , also there are mouth gels containg Lidocaine that you can rub in the area to numb it.(Anbesol or oragel)
Pauline Hi I am Alans partner I had an abscess a few weeks ago the best thing I found was a hot waterbottle on my face along with painkillers also honey rubbed onto my gum gave some relief other suggestions I was given were a cooled teabag held onto the gum for five mins and repeated as the tannic acid is supposed to relieve infection best of luck
