Bubbles in canal

If this is a stupid question, then im very sorry! I walked along the tow path today, a barge came past, where the barge had been there were large bubbles coming up from what looked like the bottom. What made the bubbles please? It looked almost like bubbles from a diver Thanks image

    I wondered if it could be fresh water muscles? I remember my grandad pinching some years ago! image
