I had the same problem. but this year I used some fleece I had left from covering plants in winter. used my dads old black poles he gave me, and kind of draped it over , securing it with little tent pegs(don't know where I got those) and its worked!
brusells are growing happily.i did put a small jam jar with beer in which I buried, but only a couple of tiny slugs I found in it.
but I did find one tiny green caterpillar this morning.squased him!
my dad used my mums old net curtains fixed to his raised bed, very cheap, you might even find these at a charity shop.
What about chicken wire? Do you think the holes would be too big, just thinking that its rigid so shouldnt need tons of assembly or much of a frame, i got two rolls out of the pound shop, they are in my greenhouse shed as i forgot what i wanted it for!
I've planted a brassica selection on my allotment plot. For protection I banged 12 3"x2" lengths from a pallet , put a plastic plant pot on top of each, and stretched plastic greenhouse shading mesh across the posts, pinning the mesh with plastic anchors bought off marshalls-seeds web site. I've also used 12 330ml plastic bottles (used) filled with rain water as further anchorage cos the site is quite windy. The plastic pots stops the fine, plastic mesh from tearing. Hope this helps. The mesh can be bought off two wests and elliott.

That net that I use would hardly let a greenfly in, it has square as usual and then diagonal.

Debris netting looks like the most economical answer that will do the job well.
How easy is it to join sections together? anyone done that and got any tips?
I'll be as responsible as I can with it, but I still doubt I'll see any birds.
