ID This Tree and Help Please

Hi,

Could someone tell me what this small tree is? We have a number of these planted and some n

eed replaced as they appeared to have died. Any ideas why they would turn brown and die?

All help would be appreciated

Thanks Peter

They're yews, Taxus baccata. Are they newly planted?

Looks like yew. If they were not planted that long ago, I would suspect lack of water as their root run is not established enough - you would need to keep them well watered over the summer and in dry periods.

Yew doesn't like waterlogged soil either.  Lots of young conifers seem to have suffered after the last couple of wet winters.  But Daintiness could well be right about lack of water.  Worth replacing the dead ones I guess - will make a beautiful hedge which only needs clipping once a year, and won't take over the neighbourhood like leylandii...
