Pear tree problem

Last year my pear tree set fruit but they were very small, maybe the size of a large marble. Then they went dark brown and the skin was like crazy paving. Does anyone know what caused this please and what I do if it happens again?

mine too. Don't think the wet weather and high winds has helped. Look for maggots in the fallen fruit. Otherwise no idea. Mine have no maggots
No maggots or other beasties inside mine either. I hope it wasn't the weather because it's not much better this year! I've looked everywhere I can think of but can't find any info about the problem - very frustrating.
