I sowed some lettuce and salad leaves a few weeks ago in a large container i mixed in some of my own garden compost and loads of seeds from the compost have grown.

I suspect that my compost does not get hot enough, does anyone else have this problem ?

And if you can get the men in your family to water the compost, so much the better!!

I dont put anything to do with potato or tomato on  my compost bins because however long you leave it, they will shoot up all over the garden. We fuss about with our tomato plants but just watch one free in the garden. Romps away.

Mike is right about keeping it turned, it will also deter rats, they hate to be disturbed. We only do ours once a week or so .

I must admit i don't turn my compost enough.

At the moment i am using a plastic bin that i was given and it's difficult to turn in there. Yes i think i should have let the seeds germinate first before sowing the lettuce i did sow in straight lines but  there were so many seedlings i couldn't tell which were the lettuce.

I have cleared them all now and will sow again, thanks for all your advice image
