Pesky birds
I've got some small trees and other specimen plants growing in pots on my patio - a treat to myself earlier this year. I mulched them with bark chips to try to keep the soil moist, but the last few days I've found the bark strewn all over the patio when I get up in the morning. I suspect it's the blackbirds I often see in the garden. Any ideas how to stop them making a mess or do I need to change my mulch type?

They love a good rummage don't they
I'd rather have the blackbirds but you could use gravel/pebbles/grit instead of bark
In the sticks near Peterborough
They cost me over £60 in that they not only rummaged around in a tray of 40 plants, they removed all the plants from the soil and spread them about. Naturally most of the plants died, or cannot be matched with their labels so at £1,50 each when sold, it was rather expensive. Where are the blooming cats when you need them.
Now I have to put shade netting over all the newly potted stuff just to keep them safe. A dratted nuisance when it comes to watering and maintenance.
I had the same problem last year, kept finding pieces of slate on the patio every morning from a large tub with a maple in, thought it was the dog as some of them were quite big but it was blackbirds, they stopped comming after a few weeks.
