Hawthorn Hedge

Hi All, Last year i planted a Hawthorn Hedge which i have to say was growing quite well that is until last week when i noticed that there seems to be a White Fungus growing on the top leafs of the hedge .  I have now noticed that the white fungus seem to be affecting a number of the leaves on the hawthorn hedge. Firstly can anyone tell me what it could be  and is there anything i can do to save my hedge.

Hi Edd,  Yes it looks exactly like that. Is Powdery Mildew treatable? Thank you.

    Good deduction Edd image

That would've been my guess too.

Powdery mildew affects plants that are susceptible due to stress of one sort or another - often under-watering, particularly with something recently planted which has a lot of greenery to support, when its roots haven't really had time to establish.

I would make sure that there's no grass or weeds growing around the base of your hedge, and give it a good watering once a week until the autumn.  If we get a prolonged hot dry spell do this twice or more a week.

With a bit of care I'm sure your hedge will recover.

Good choice by the way - I love a hawthorn hedge image

Water it well. A new hedge will need a good soak of water at the roots at least once a week during the summer. If it has much top growth, any rain will not reach the roots.

Hi I bought three Small Rowan Trees early this year and put them in pots, they have grown well but one has got very tall and lanky would it be wise to take the top of and would that help it bush out?

I use 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda in a litre of water as a non chemical spray on all powdery mildews.  Works very well.
