We were at Whinlatter Forest in Cumbria recently. There is a zone around the forest that's grey squirrel free. I don't mind a grey squirrel in the garden as there aren't reds anywhere near us. However, after seeing the photos of the reds with squirrel pox ( the greys carry the virus but don't suffer from it) I'm all for protecting the reds. Anyone remember Tufty the red squirrel? A kids book maybe 50 years ago.
I think it's sad that people have to be so cruel in the way they talk about killing animals with total disregard to the pain it may cause. I love red squirrels too, but I also love to see the grey squirrels in my garden.
To be honest I don't understand why this debate keeps on cropping up, everyone has differing opinions for different reasons and as someone who is totally against animal cruelty of ANY kind it is actually quite upsetting

Some people are naturally provocative, sometimes intentionally and sometimes in all innocence .......... I tend to ignore threads that seem calculated to cause upset ......there are forums where such discussions are appropriate, but this is primarily a gardening forum rather than for the discussion of the ethics of culling wildlife etc.
No offence intended to anyone
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Does anyone remember when reds were still widespread?
I seem to remember as a child in the early eighties seeing both reds and greys in a country park near Derby where I grew up. I asked my sister recently as bring older than me she might recall better but she says she doesn't remember.

I have heard of local groups getting together to conduct their own cull but I think this probably causes more problems than it solves.
They need their ears cleaned out with lead.
