I also had the problem of pansies dying, planted in fresh compost in a wall basket. There were no grubs in the soil, I checked, assumed it was something I'd done. Have since bought violas and they're fine.......not in the basket though, that is still empty and looking a bit forlorn.
I have a Crossandra Fortuna house plant which has nearly finished flowering. My question is do I leave the long spikes on or cut them off, are they seed pods?
