I think they are early summer variety. They're planted in neutral soil, a bit stoney, and get sun in the afternoon. I live on the pennines - so we get plenty of wind. I weed around them to keep the soil clear.
Sorry Marie - don't know how but this got missed
This is what I'd do - I'd cut down the canes that had flowers/fruit on them this year and leave the rest - tying them in to some support.
Then I'd give them a good mulching with some well rotted farmyard manure , spreading it around the plants but not touching the stems.
Now cross your fingers and hope for better things next summer.
